<br />
Brand: Everfresh<br />
Type: (Juice, Dealcholized, etc.): Pure Juice<br />
Color, Vintage, Tasted, Blogged, Sparking, Score?<br />
Amber, 2013, Tasted, still, 7/10<br />
<br />
<br />
My Experience:<br />
I saw this back at Fry's and Walmart while we're shopping, and I thought doing a taste test of three different pure varietal apple juices would be fun! I haven't seen in Apple juice before that is marketed as from a single type of Apple. <br />
<br />
It reminds me of candied apples on the nose, and it made an interest crackling sound just after I poured it! I still am not sure what caused it. Anyone out there have any ideas? This is a still drink so I'm out of ideas. <br />
<br />
It was amber in color, and unexpectedly, surprisingly smooth. Intriguingly smooth. Also quite light and it didn't leave a coating on my mouth like cheap high-fructose corn syrup laden juices do sometimes.<br />
<br />
It left a green-apple-candy taste in my mouth, not in a bad way, but not in a good way either. It left my mouth with that same weird feeling as after eating a green-apple Jolly Rancher.<br />
<br />
Works as a Wine Alternative: Probably not, but it's a great culinary drink<br />
<br />
Did I Like it: Yes, 7/10<br />
<br />
Would I Recommend it: Yes, I think it would be fun to do all three in the same night sometime.<br />
<br />
<br />
Who Might Like it: Of course, if you like apple juice, you'll like this.<span id="goog_58345422"></span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Medium strong carbonation, very bright in color, Fuchsia. It has a deep round cherry scent.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />
It’s bright and limey, the pear is lessened compared to the Welch’s Raspberry Limeade. Quite sweet, it reminds me of a Shirley Temple. Steady carbonation. I liked better at first sip compared to the end of the 3rd glass. It was punchy and buzzy at first, with a foamy mild, but cherry-strong finish, leaving a minor tingle on the tongue. It’s acidic, but I’d describe it more as a tartness. It’s well tempered by the cherry and sugar.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Did I Like it: 7/10, finding a good pairing could make this more than a novelty, but I’m not sure what to pair it with. It’d be good with vanilla ice cream, and compliment it sweetly.</span></div>
</div>
<div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Would I Recommend it: It was fun, but the Strawberry Lemonade by Welch’s was more complex and easily parable with dinner foods. This is more soda like.

<div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Who Might Like it: Anyone who likes Shirley Temples. </span></div>

<span style="color: white; font-family: inherit;">It’s dry for a juice, and has a slight bite. It’s lightly carbonated, and has a light mouthfeel. It’s a bit of a tart, green apple taste.

<span style="color: white; font-family: inherit;">Works as a Wine Alternative: I think it’s straddling a line between dry juice and sweet-for-wine that makes this a hard decision.
</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: white; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: white; font-family: inherit;">Did I Like it: Not so much, It’s a bit to tart for my tongue, and oddly enough, my wife who often likes tart flavors didn’t fall for this one either.

<span style="color: white;">This is probably the most popular alcohol replacement out there. I’ve seen it served at weddings during the toast instead of Champagne, and my family has had it yearly during Thanksgiving and Christmas for many years. It’s a staple of the holiday season for me, and it was the first thing I’d ever drank that was from a wine-bottle-shaped-bottle. It stood out as unique to me because of how rarely we had it, and it’s extreme fizz made me have to sip it lightly. It was only years down the line that I started to think “what other options do we have?” I’ve always liked to try new foods, and after a few years, despite liking Martinelli’s, I got bored with it. As it was my parents making the purchase, I didn’t really do anything about it. Eventually, in the last few years, as I started thinking more about the food I was eating both from a culinary perspective and a health perspective, I really started to search for other things to pair with my foods. In a way, this should have been the first thing I posted here, because it was first wine-alterative I’d ever tried. So, I sat down with a new bottle and dissected it.
</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: white;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: white;">It’s the color of a clear apple juice, though lighter than most. The bubbles cling quite strongly to the sides of the flute. Various sized bubbles floated up, creating a very slow, but stead stream of released carbonation. It’s quite strongly carbonated, and if you place the plastic topper back on (after you’ve popped the bottle cap off for the first round) it will shoot off when you open it. I’ve often gotten the hiccups from drinking the first glass too swiftly. It still happens to me often. it smells like apple juice, but with a touch more tartness in the scent. The carbonation gives it a strong prickle, and if you give it a switch in your mouth, it foams and evaporates almost immediately. It’s quite a fun sensation. It’s <i>very</i> sweet, with a touch of tart from the apple, and perhaps a bit more acidic than straight apple juice. And I’ll emphasize, it’s <i>very </i>sweet for someone looking for a wine replacement. There is no barrier of entry- anyone who likes apple juice will likely enjoy this. It’s simple, not very complex, and yet I personally find it addictive. I’ll finish any bottle that gets opened. I like sweet drinks, and even though I’m finding some juices and be too sweet when paired with meals, Martinelli’s is more easily paired with many foods. It is, however, a pretty strong drink that can overwhelm some foods. It would definitely work as an aperitif or dessert wine - definitely as a dessert wine.
</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: white;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: white;">It’s nothing spectacular, but then again I’ve grown up with it. I think it fails with some of the pairings I usually have had it with, and it would work much better with stronger foods than turkey. Some of the sides, cranberries for example, make a better pairing.
</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: white;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: white;">Martinelli’s Sparkling Cider is agressive. It hits your hard up front, and in that way it’s like a soda - it’s not subtle. it’s good for cutting through tart, but it will affect how the rest of your food tastes because of how sweet it is. It minimizes the sweetness that may be present in your meal, for example pairing it with ham would emphasize it’s umami, but diminish it’s sweetness. This happens without any added sweeteners - it’s pretty much just apples and carbonation - which is interesting because they have an organic sparkling apple <i>juice</i> which is different from the cider (but they have non-sparking apple cider and non-sparkling apple juice that are the same!), but the process this is put through intensifies it’s flavors and naturally occurring sugar.
</span></div>
<div>
<div>
<span style="color: white;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: white;">Works as a Wine Alternative: For any strongly sparkling dessert wine, yes.
</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: white;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: white;">Did I Like it: yes! 8 out of 10. My sweet tooth (and sweet) wife likes it also.
</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: white;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: white;">Would I Recommend it: Yes, just remember it’s the furthest from dry you can get. It’s aggressive, yet approachable for those coming from sodas and juices.
</span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: white;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div>
<span style="color: white;">Who Might Like it: Someone who is looking for somethings subtle or more complex. </span></div>

We'll find out with Carl Jung Red Wine.</div>
<br />
We had it with with bacon and eggs. Good legs, deep maroon in color, we had it just slightly chilled. <br />
<br />
The scent made me thing of figs or dark berries like cherry. It's dry, but not bitter, though a touch bitter in the aftertaste, leaving my mouth feeling mat. Strong tannins, and mildly acidic. the finish brings out a little bit of the fruity taste and also some astringency. <br />
<br />
It was acidic enough to cut through the greasy bacon and eggs, and worked well with it. Just below room temperature seemed a good place for it. It's much more drinkable than some of the Chardonays I've had so far, but it's not as approachable as some of the White Zinfandels I've had. It's got a weighty mouthfeel.<br />
<br />
I'm still not used to how dry some of these are compared to my Juice-trained tongue. The more I try I'm realizing either I'm not used to it yet, or I simply prefer sweeter drinks.<br />
<br />

It's listed in the ingredients.<br />
<br />
5 out of 10<br />
<br />
Works as a Wine Alternative: Yes<br />
Did I Like it: I did, paired correctly with something that needs something strong to cut through it. My wife nearly spat it out.<br />
Would I Recommend it: Not a bad first red to try, I suppose.<br />
<br />
Who Might Like it: Those looking for dry alternatives.Duseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11777355902434675183noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2789754242971371723.post-45698750846307327102013-10-27T21:23:00.002-07:002013-10-27T21:28:46.704-07:00Carl Jung White WineContinuing on with Carl Jung, we will consider the collective unconscious. Oh, sorry, wrong topic.<span class="Apple-style-span"></span><br />
<div>
<br />
My Experience: I had it with tomato goat cheese and basil stuffed chicken, right off the grill.<br />
<br />
It's appears is very clear, just the tiniest tinge of color to it. It has a strong fermentation smell, must stronger than it's taste. It was very light bodied, zero tannins of course, with just a light bubbling. It's sweet, and moderately acidic, and long legs on the glass. While more flavorful than some of the Chardonnays I've had, it wasn't very fruity, perhaps a touch nutty.<br />
<br />
Did I like it: Yes, though my wife not so much. She didn't mind the taste, but the smell put her off.<br />
Would I Recommend it: It's an easy foray into dealcoholized drinks.<br />
<br />
Who Might Like it: This requires very little commitment, it's not a punch you in the face drink. It's light an easy to try.<br />

It's very translucent, and has just the slightest amber tinge to it. The scent isn't far from the de-alcholized chardonnays I've tried. I couldn't make out much more than whatever was left from the fermentation, which left a small touch of carbonation. The first taste to hit me was strongly sour and tangy, only slightly acidic, and crisp. </div>

I can see how it relates to the Riesling from Draper Valley vineyards, more dry. It certainly made what we were eating it with seem sweeter. (Homemade enchiladas) It worked <i>fairly</i> well. The bitter tang got milder after a few sips, and it seemed to lighten as I got through the glass. A vaguely grapefuity taste. It's light bodied.</div>

(I'll tell you why I say wow in a minute.)<br />
<br />
First of all, I've been gone for a while. Let me start by giving you excuses. Two of them. Here are pictures.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQaA3HNsSRajeAOl9xc6zTdr_MXnJwJUPGxj2CLIIoINDd2FEPAKguifhDpDKVG9zy0mIuMgnb9jfZlxxv4hbhJNw9Rp4YCIqajgoRPBdZCfIiv4fBuwIqTS4Vn2LLSV2lVov_oNpEGSkm/s1600/VAN+DUSEN_8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQaA3HNsSRajeAOl9xc6zTdr_MXnJwJUPGxj2CLIIoINDd2FEPAKguifhDpDKVG9zy0mIuMgnb9jfZlxxv4hbhJNw9Rp4YCIqajgoRPBdZCfIiv4fBuwIqTS4Vn2LLSV2lVov_oNpEGSkm/s320/VAN+DUSEN_8.jpg" width="254" /></a></div>
<br />
They are not so cute from the back, but the twins in my wife's belly, plus the two kiddos running around the house have made this blog not-a-priority. I have still been trying new things out, however, and taking notes. I just haven't written them up.<br />
<br />
Well, I am now motivated to catch up. Here I'll tell you why I said "wow."<br />
<br />
The new blogger system made it super easy to look at my traffic. And guess what, I've had over 3,100 hits over the life of this blog. A huge hit in the blogosphere? No. Was I surprised that anyone else other than myself has been looking at this? Yes.<br />
<br />
More drinks to come, stay tuned!<br />

Before I'd gotten around to making the order, however, I was contacted by Peter Strnad of Kristian Regále, who simply said he enjoyed reading the reviews I'd written. I told him to keep watching for when I finally reviewed the last two flavors once I got my hands on them, and he offered to send me some of the Black Currant (apparently that's the one that people really notice.) Now, I know what you're thinking. "What about your journalistic integrity!" I have only two things to say. First, you are taking this blog way too seriously. Second, you only have to look at my <a href="http://juiceofthevine.blogspot.com/2009/11/christian-regale-pomegranate-apple.html">previous</a> <a href="http://juiceofthevine.blogspot.com/2010/06/kristian-regale-sparkling-apple-juice.html">reviews</a> <a href="http://juiceofthevine.blogspot.com/2010/05/kristian-regale-sparkling-peach-juice.html">before</a> <a href="http://juiceofthevine.blogspot.com/2010/09/kristian-regale-sparkling-lingonberry.html">now</a> to see I've always been (and will be) a fan of Kristian Regále (<a href="http://juiceofthevine.blogspot.com/2010/05/kristian-regale-sparkling-peach-juice.html">and been honest in my opinion</a>.) Anyway, the best news of all this is that he informed me they are now just now selling through amazon (not a 3rd party at amazon) which means free shipping on orders over $25. <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Kristian-Sparkling-Beverage-Swedish-25-4-Ounce/dp/B004AFUHEA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1299703418&sr=8-2">Here</a> is a sample pack that has the Black Currant and more. Also make sure to try out the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Kristian-Sparkling-Beverage-Pomegranate-Apple-25-4-Ounce/dp/B004AC0PCW/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1299703418&sr=8-12">Pomegranate</a>.</div><div><br /></div><div>The color is a rosy plum, and its scent, like most juices, indicative of the fruit used in it. (read: it smells like black currant!) The carbonation is perfectly fantastic, just like all Kristian Regále (see the link in the sidebar), with its zesty bite that's not over the top, and full of tiny bubbles. It doesn't completely dissipate on your tongue like some of this style of drink does. It's on the drier side of Kristian Regále, which is quite dry for a juice, still sweet for a wine. It's fairly acidic, medium bodied and on the bold side. Fresh plums come to mind while drinking it. </div><div><br /></div><div>It cleanses well, and it'd pair well with lots of foods. Steaks, pastas, pork and even some desserts. It's very versatile, and complimentary to lots of foods. The ingredients list is gleefully short. Water, apple & black currant concentrates, beet sugar, carbon dioxide, natural flavors and citric acid.</div><div><br /></div><div>This is now my favorite Kristian Regále drink. It's more nuanced and sophisticated than the pomegranate, and a bit more versatile. It's as wine-like as you can get in the sparkling world, without going for de-alcholized wine. I'm definitely adding this to my table drink list, and with how often we use Amazon to order things, a case of this will be on my Birthday and Christmas lists indefinitely.</div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiv_y3tdqCulQNfaSyrvQuz65hixALSMr0LsEYeOJ85sOdKboMjJZT_xHWxqTxSdNXL-KkbXPIHRCJ1w27H6h28CvMcc6pnZUwOKkoP-fEJj8YZN1Mk0DNMnGcWdPwWbMzmhp-b4YXl-5tv/s400/IMG_0792.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5582198964391312690" style="float: right; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 10px; cursor: pointer; width: 299px; height: 400px; " /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><br /></span></div><div>We drank this with Spinach Prosciutto Noodle Casserole.</div></div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">Works as a Wine Alternative:</span> Yes</div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">Did I Like it:</span> My favorite Kirstian Regále so far, 10</div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">Would I Recommend it: </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;">Yes, it's easy to pick up and try, pairs well with lots of food, and tastes great. </span></div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">Who Might Like it:</span> Again, this one has wide appeal. </div>Duseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11777355902434675183noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2789754242971371723.post-82588085357211222362010-12-15T11:18:00.000-08:002010-12-15T19:17:15.379-08:00Carl Jung Rosé Wine<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwJgbxy5X_mPbEXx8Ndl61pf6Y2fk_Rkgi5F89yrlOGwkA9WqB_EFyQ5Xe0HusxMwemKXxcEae2JxEzxGbkUan4-ucxunfKjDgjncZYegPljHXXrjVPTmsBrFlQon0qeMqUEx56A4m3EA4/s1600/IMG_2858.0.jpg"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwJgbxy5X_mPbEXx8Ndl61pf6Y2fk_Rkgi5F89yrlOGwkA9WqB_EFyQ5Xe0HusxMwemKXxcEae2JxEzxGbkUan4-ucxunfKjDgjncZYegPljHXXrjVPTmsBrFlQon0qeMqUEx56A4m3EA4/s400/IMG_2858.0.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5551004041978410482" /></a><br /><div>My Experience:</div><div><div><br /></div><div>After a hiatus, I'm back! I've got 5 new posts to write soon, plus several more drinks I'm excited to share with everyone!</div><div><br /></div><div>First up is the beginning of the Carl Jung series, first with their dealcoholized Rosé Wine. My wife got the following bottles for me, and I'll go through my experience with each one!</div><div><br /></div><div>Rosé</div><div>White</div><div>Red</div><div>Merlot</div><div>Riesling</div><div><br /></div><div>I popped off the screw top, and was immediately met with a scent that easily betrayed the fermentation process this drink had been through. It was just a touch fruity, in both scent and taste. On the nose I thought of boysenberries, but on the tongue I changed my mind to raspberries. With a touch of a tingle on the tongue, it was much like the first (Ariel) White Zinfandel we had. </div><div><br /></div><div>This one threw me a bit of a loop, though. The fermentation taste is strong, and it's only very slightly fruity. It's not sweet like a juice, but a touch sweet for a wine. It has a tang to it like a very ripe citrus fruit, a bit a of bitter finish, and is Medium bodied. Over all, quite mild. The pork we ate with it was a little sweet of a pairing with it, though it contrasted nicely with the not-very-sweet-for-a-strawberry strawberry. It was good with the olives, and sage infused cheese, and it was also great after a short bite of lemon, so I'd try pairing it with acidic, tangy dishes like lemon chicken, though it could contrast really well with a creamy dish also.</div><div><br /></div><div>My wife says the color is a rosy mauve. We are finally getting to them! We had it with minestrone.</div><div><div><br /></div><div>It's a light golden color, not quite as translucent as some of the Chardonnay we've had. It has medium legs, not holding on long but fairly weighty. It has a tangy, floral scent that is very pleasing that reminded me of Citrus blossoms. </div><div><br /></div><div>The taste is floral also, and from the scent I was expecting a strong, sour taste but it's milder, not weak, but still with a unique identifiable taste. I also didn't catch the citrus I was expecting, nor the acid. It is heavy bodied, bordering on thick, but </div><div>doesn't leave a strong syrupy residue in your mouth the way cheap white grape juice from concentrate does. It does have a very long finish, however. </div><div><br /></div><div>I found it went well with the Minestrone, it was just strong enough to balance well with it. Red raspberry color, but almost with a touch of orange, and smells very different from any other juice I've had, must be the lingonberry, and I can get just a touch of the apple, a bit of a tart smell. A bit of a musky, dusty rose scent. It's a bit more strongly carbonated on the tongue, the fizz completely evaporates. Only a hit of the apple gets through the very powerful lingonberry. As typical, it's not as sweet as most juices, but also has a slightly bitter finish, and medium acidity. It had some noticeable dregs at the end.</div><div><br /></div><div>As for paring I'd drink it with something that you'd normally have with a fruity drink, maybe mexican food like fajitas or burritos.</div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">Works as a Wine Alternative:</span> I think with the right paring, yeah.</div><div><div><br /></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsPZJP3lgefMHq9rTyvWspL0PBIxr85CMty7l0BwbBu0DzIHH42q2VID61gQZ-JLuMHmxSBmO8mb3eSvkPhIAUp_Crinpm8jxlvGqOsGfjzoHhrMyK_VvawdZ_Xn49wkSUZxsstPU41oA/s400/IMG_0778.0.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5513473172968535090" style="float: left; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 10px; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px; " /></span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">Did I Like it:</span> Not as much as Kristian Regále's Pomegranate offering, but it's still a unique drink worth trying. 6/10</div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">Would I Recommend it:</span> Yep!</div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">Who Might Like it:</span> In terms of acidity, its a lot like raspberry juice, though the taste itself is different.</div><div><br /></div></div>Duseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05545909762133610728noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2789754242971371723.post-39026736559360967572010-09-01T07:35:00.000-07:002010-12-15T11:41:08.243-08:00Kristian Regále Sparkling Pear<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilg0Hz3JXMmM3HYNiK56Oa5WpxSG3i2rLe5eb3gF23EfpvqVBMrMm2B8xov_oCngzXuVwMXFMUOG4cI-qfbpE8QprIkvKmjnXLWekJntZ2S3SGgTxUHui2OfEgsmZcK9WgxxA7h71CLj4/s1600/IMG_0081.jpg"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 299px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilg0Hz3JXMmM3HYNiK56Oa5WpxSG3i2rLe5eb3gF23EfpvqVBMrMm2B8xov_oCngzXuVwMXFMUOG4cI-qfbpE8QprIkvKmjnXLWekJntZ2S3SGgTxUHui2OfEgsmZcK9WgxxA7h71CLj4/s400/IMG_0081.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5511961284079117202" /></a><div>My Experience:</div><div><br /></div><div>This will be short one, as most of Kristian Regále stuff is (delightfully!) similar.<div><br /></div><div>After finding a <a href="http://juiceofthevine.blogspot.com/2010/06/ikea-and-old-favorite.html">hidden cache of Kristian Regále</a> we've been pounding through them, and I actually went back get another set! </div><div><br /></div><div>My wife made "My Dream Greek Pasta" (which was quite yummy) when we decided to try this. The color is similar to a light apple juice or some of the more translucent Chardonnays we've tried, with small bubbles just slowly trickling up. I noted both pear and apple on the nose. </div><div><br /></div><div>My first impression was positive. The pear taste is not as strong as the RW Knudsen's sparkling pear, and the carbonation is on par with the other Kristian Regále drinks I've tried, though it's a bit more mild than the Pomegranate, and much more mild than the Lingonberry. It's light bodied and the citrus acid gives it just a tiny acidic kick. Comparing only the taste, and not the carbonation, it's terribly dissimilar from Martinelli's. </div><div><br /></div><div>The mild, yet pleasant taste makes this easy to pair with. It'd go with many, many different foods, though especially with cold, light foods, like salads, pitas and hummus, or cheeses.</div></div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">Works as a Wine Alternative:</span> Yes</div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">Did I Like it:</span> Yes, 7 out of 10. It's light and refreshing, it's not overwhelming, and it's easy to pair with, all of which makes it a great introduction to something beyond your typical lunch-time juice.</div>Duseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05545909762133610728noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2789754242971371723.post-62737263016389834662010-06-23T14:47:00.000-07:002010-11-03T11:26:29.666-07:00Lorina French Berry Soda<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYIlGlsId3D_b0um7lZTgzj8Z_dA6XguoowwjdtO8czKEtWKZ6kkCQTluhiVVC9gYiVxFpdgARwE3FoEIWXy8hq5H44QPibIfyzBfX5S_Emx-eNNwmpgU6HqvfmUKbVxzXB4ZkdBMaVj4/s1600/IMG_0706.0.jpg"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYIlGlsId3D_b0um7lZTgzj8Z_dA6XguoowwjdtO8czKEtWKZ6kkCQTluhiVVC9gYiVxFpdgARwE3FoEIWXy8hq5H44QPibIfyzBfX5S_Emx-eNNwmpgU6HqvfmUKbVxzXB4ZkdBMaVj4/s400/IMG_0706.0.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5486096940597831842" /></a><br /><div>My Experience:</div><div><br /></div><div>While on a family trip to Hawaii (I know, I'm very lucky. :) we went to the grocery store to buy food for the week. I ran across several things at the local Safeway that I didn't expect to find. One of them is this French Berry Soda.</div><div><br /></div><div>The first thing I noticed was the bottle. It had the same type of as the Effervé, with a rubber stopper permanently latched onto the top, which you can use to reseal the bottle. Genius, I love it! I actually kept the bottle of the Effervé so I can use it again in the future!</div><div><br /></div><div>This not-quite-pink not-really-red drink smells like other Strawberry sodas I've had. It's finely carbonated, and the first thing that hit my tongue besides the (mostly straw) berry-ness was lemon, which gave it a good touch of acidity. There is the very very faintest woodenness to the taste. It's a very light drink for a soda. </div><div><br /></div><div>It cut through some sweet foods we had quite well. Pairs well with strong foods, or anyting you'd normally eat with any kind of berry, like salads for example. It is very sweet like a soda, but more nuanced than most. It's crisp, clean, and I can see myself sipping this to cool off. The carbonation, though fine and producing small bubbles, is still strong.</div><div><br /></div><div>6.5 out of 10</div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">Works as a Wine Alternative:</span> I'd say it works as a culinary beverage, but it's not wine-like at all.</div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">Did I Like it:</span> Yes! I found this drink, along with a bottle of Lorina French Berry Soda to try.</div><div><br /></div><div>This would be a direct competitor to Kristian Regále's Sparkling Pomegranate Apple beverage. Let's see how it fares.</div><div><br /></div><div>It has a dark red, plum color, and not a very strong smell. It doesn't have the steadily streaming bubbles I'm used to from Kristian Regále, and it does have a bit of a head. A very fine carbonation, and is very drinkable on its own. I can't taste anything other than Pomegranate and Apple, though that's not a bad thing. It was a good pairing with your average pizza, (though it didn't pair well with the peanut Thai pizza we tried) and it has just a touch of acid from some citrus extract.</div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">Works as a wine Alternative: This one is very approachable, and still very much a juice, though one I wouldn't mind having often in the house.</span></div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">Did I like it:</span> I thought it was good, though not spectacular. 6 out of 10.</div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">Would I Recommend it:</span> In terms of trying to find wine alternatives, no I wouldn't really recommend this as a must try, but I like it enough to get more should I ever swing by Safeway again.</div><div><br /></div>Duseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05545909762133610728noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2789754242971371723.post-81075867549765601282010-06-04T14:13:00.000-07:002010-11-03T11:26:58.420-07:00R.W. The carbonation is relatively light. Smells of strawberries, and a hint of something else, maybe grape or apple. It's not that sweet, for a juice. It is not tart, like strawberry stuff often is. The taste definitely hints at the pineapple that is also in this, like in the <a href="http://juiceofthevine.blogspot.com/2010/06/rw-knudsens-sparkling-cherry.html">cherry</a>. It's mellow and easy going, and would probably drink well with lots of light or medium foods. My wife, who is also a strawberry lover in general, loves this. We had it with plain ol' spaghetti, which was a bit heavy for this drink, but otherwise an ok pairing. Canned spaghetti sauce tends to be very sweet, which helped this Strawberry drink because its sweetness didn't overwhelm some of the other flavors, like it might have, if we had this with something more savory like a roast or anything with gravy.</div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">Works as a wine Alternative:</span> Not really. You can drink it with anything, and it'd be ok, but I don't think it would pair particularly well, in terms of giving contrast or complementing a food, with anything. </div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">Did I like it:</span> I think it makes a wonderful cooler, I'd love to sip it with a straw out on the patio, but it doesn't really make for a great pairing with lots of foods. My wife disagrees. We will have to try it again soon for a second take. 7 out of 10.</div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">Would I Recomend it:</span> Not as an alternative, yes as a drink. </div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">Who Might Like it:</span> Juice lovers.</div>Duseyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05545909762133610728noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2789754242971371723.post-84225365084323945482010-06-04T12:49:00.000-07:002010-11-03T11:28:01.471-07:00R.W. It's not as sparkling as Martinelli's (I'm learning that nothing is) and the carbonation was quite coarse. The acidity is higher than most sparkling juices I've tried, and the flavor is very strong. Of cherry, that is, though the plum juice that's also in the drink shows through a little. The acidity probably comes from the pineapple juice that's also in this blend. It's very sweet, though not as sweet as Martinelli's, similar to<a href="http://juiceofthevine.blogspot.com/2009/11/rw-knudsens-sparkling-pear-juice.html"> R.W.'s offering in pear</a> but somewhat more tart, due to the cherries I'm assuming.</div><div><br /></div><div>It's got a nip of sour in the finish. It could make a good every-day drink, (which I'm calling a <i>Table Drink</i>, as in a <i>Table Wine.)</i></div><div><br /></div><div>It reminds me a lot of the cherry <i>kirsebærsauce</i> sauce that goes with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ris_a_la_mande">Ris a la mande</a>. </div><div><br /></div><div>This would be great for a cherry float with vanilla ice cream!</div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">Works as a wine Alternative: S</span>ure.</div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">Did I like it:</span> Yes, though nothing spectacular, 6 out of 10.</div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">Would I Recommend it:</span> Just like the Kristian Regále stuff, I've enjoyed trying all of these and comparing them. Pretty strong carbonation. It's definitely got a green apple taste to it, and is ever so slightly bitter due to the carbonation. I think it's sweeter than the peach, but it has a tangy, sour taste also. It's good, a little more acidic than most juices, just like all the other Kirstian Regále's we've tried. We actually found it at Walmart, and we recently went back to get more, but when we went down the juice aisle, there was a huge empty section where the Pomegranate had been, with only the plain ol' apple, as well as peach. While those were good, the Pomegranate had a particularly unique flavor. I hoped they were just out of stock, but now it's been a couple of months since I've seen it there. I gave up hope of finding a local source for the stuff.</div><div><br /></div><div>Skip ahead a few weeks. We were buying one of our little ones a new mattress at Ikea, and after we checked out we found three huge stacks of bottles. Low and behold, they were all Kristian Regále! As a gift my wife got me the rest of the R.W. Knudsen Sparkling Juices I hadn't tried yet (see side bar for the round-up) but we also found this Effervé Sparkling Pink Lemonade ("Pétillante Limonade Rose" or somethin'.) They also had a <a href="http://www.eurobubblies.com/efferve/Lemonade_noflash.html">non-pink version</a>, but we went with the pink version. (What's Pink Lemonade anyway? Is it made from <a href="http://www.google.com/images?client=safari&rls=en&q=pink+lemons&oe=UTF-8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&ei=q1bkS9-6DoHWsgPV4bi6DQ&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CCIQsAQwAA">pink lemons?</a> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lemonade#Pink_lemonade">No.</a>)</div><div><br /></div><div>The color is light pink, looks like a traditional pink lemonade but with no pulp. Lightly carbonated, it's best served a bit colder than we had it (we only had time for a quick chill). It's quite dry for a juice, just a little sweet, and just a little tangy, and is a touch more sour during the finish. It's alright as a palate cleanser but doesn't quite leave me with the clean feeling a good one does. It's very acidic. We had it with some very acidic lemon hummus salad dressing, and the dressing made the lemonade taste sweet, so I'm glad the lemonade wasn't sweeter or it would have been overwhelming with our salad.</div><div><br /></div><div>Looking at the ingredients, there is technically no juice, just citric acid and other ingredients, though all natural.</div><div><br /></div><div>It doesn't really taste like lemonade. It's not as tart as I thought a cranberry drink would be, and it's less sweet than the pear drink. It's lighter than most cranberry drinks I've had also. I enjoy it, but think it needs a great pairing to shine. On the negative, it's almost watery, and just a bit sweet and bit tart, overall pretty mellow for a sparkling drink. I want to try it with something light but savory and/or beefy.
